I originally learned Traditional Bandage Binding from a midwife friend of mine, who first learned of postpartum belly binding from her grandmother, and then later learned how to put it into practice from women she supported during their postpartum time. Postpartum belly binding is a tradition that has been passed down in many cultures to promote healing and wellbeing for the postpartum woman.

The benefits of belly binding include helping your uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size, helping your abdominal muscles heal together correctly, to help your organs relocate themselves in your abdomen, decrease postpartum bleeding and prevent hemorrhaging, provides support and posture assistance during breastfeeding, prevents cold [imbalance] from entering the woman's body, gives the woman a sense of "togetherness," security and comfort.

Traditional Bandage Binding is done with large elastic bandages that are wrapped back and forth around the woman's waistline and secured with medical tape. The bandages are lightweight and breathable enough to be worn under clothes and while sleeping at night, but also have enough elastic to achieve the desired fit.

postpartum belly binding service descriptions

Traditional Bandage w/ Instructions: With this service, you will receive 2 elastic bandages to bind yourself with the help of a friend or family member for approximately 2 weeks. You will be provided written instructions so your support person can effectively bind you during your first two weeks postpartum. This service also includes the necessary medical tape for binding.

Traditional Bandage Binding: Within the first 3 days postpartum (or whenever you return home from the hospital/birth center if you are not already giving birth at home), I will come over to bind you in the comfort of your own home. During this time, a support person should be present to receive one-on-one instruction on how to do future bindings for the rest for the two week duration. The mother will be given a total of 2 bandages, bandage tape and verbal/demonstrated belly binding instructions.
